Webinar: Documenting Digital Attacks on Indigenous, Land and Environmental Defenders

Are you an Indigenous, Land, and Environmental Defender or civil society organisation working in land, environmental, and climate defence? Join the webinar on March 27, 13:00 UTC. Spanish live interpretation will be available.

The rise of digital threats against Indigenous, Land, and Environmental Defenders (ILEDs) presents a growing challenge in the defense of land and climate justice. As defenders increasingly rely on technology for their work, they also become targets of online harassment, surveillance, and cyberattacks. Yet, digital attacks remain vastly underreported, undocumented, and poorly understood, leaving critical gaps in protection measures and response strategies.

We invite you to a webinar that will introduce key methodologies and tools to better document these digitally mediated attacks. Hosted by the Data Working Group (DWG) ALLIED, this event will explore why documenting digital threats matters and how we can build a common language to classify these attacks more effectively. We aim to address:

  1. the lack of explicit documentation on online or digital attacks against ILEDs;
  2. the need for a clear, standardised language to classify and analyse these incidents; and
  3. strategies for improving data collection to better understand regional trends and develop more effective protection measures.

By joining this webinar, you will gain insights into:

  • existing methodologies for documenting digital attacks on defenders; and
  • challenges and gaps in current data and how to address them.

Additionally, we’ll discuss potential future avenues, including the need to deepen our understanding of the layers of violence faced by women and LGBTQIA+ land and environmental defenders over the next year.
