Arturo Carcará: “It is not our responsibility to question their privileges”

The Mexican singer shares his views about colonialism, in our first interview of the #UnlearnColonialism series.

At Digital Defenders Partnerships we continue to reflect on the challenges of adopting a decolonial perspective in our work. That is why we started a process of reflection that will take us through three continents. In this first episode, Arturo Carcará, musician from Puebla, invites us to think about power, discrimination, privilege, migration and more.

By the head of service
of this border patrol station,
in his capacity as substitute
for his own boss,
on the indicated date
the resolution has been made that….

In the presence of a counsel,
the designated passenger,
does not present a document
in which he has been invited.
He has nowhere to drop dead
it is evident that…

To you I’m just a long-lived loser,
who comes to see what sells inside you.
To you I’m just an indigenous aggressor
who comes to make profits
on this side of the planet,
at the cost of plunder.
I heard that story before,
it has already happened.

“And don’t think you are discriminated against,
we have them locked up.
“Here there is no Mexican,
here there is no Venezuelan,
who is not treated well by Europe”.
Just ask yourself why, why.

He was kicked out of his neighborhood.
He comes here without any money.
On top of that, for his government
he’s a freak too.
He has nowhere to drop dead
it’s obvious that…

To you I’m just a long-lived loser,
who comes to see what sells inside you.
To you I’m just a refugee, an invader,
who comes to make profits
on this side of the planet,
at the cost of plunder.
I heard that story before,
it has already happened.

Crossing the Balkans,
or crossing the Rio Bravo,
Hondurans and Mexicans arrive,
Iranians and Afghans arrive.
There they call them refugees,
and Europe gives them a hand.
Like the Latino in the “gabacho”,
we all arrive wet.

For you I am just me, for you Mr. Macron.
For you Biden or Macron, or Trump.
For you I’m just a long-lived loser,
who comes to see what sells inside you.
For you I’m just an indigenous aggressor,
who lives obsessed with resentment.
